Experts project that by the year 2020 there will be ten million self-driving vehicles on the road. Yet despite this, just 13% of drivers across the world say they would use a self-driving car. However, over the past decade we have seen massive advancements in this arena. Meanwhile, consumer confidence in self-driving tech remains low. The biggest concern among drivers is safety. According to one survey in the United States, 54% of drivers feel less safe sharing the road with self-driving cars and a further 78% are afraid of riding in one.

However, research indicates that autonomous vehicles in fact improve road safety by reducing accidents. 81% of car crashes are caused by human error. Driverless cars may face skepticism now but perhaps public perception will change with time. Consequently, removing human judgement from the equation and replacing it with sophisticated AI technology may eliminate much of the danger. For example, drunk driving incidents would decrease as there would be no designated driver needed when the car drives itself.

The other major issue preventing the widespread adoption of autonomous vehicles, is cyber security. Many consumers are concerned that self-driving cars could be a target for hackers and cybercrime. Cybersecurity experts have identified a wide range of potential cyber threats. Many believe that current technology is not yet robust enough to handle these, thereby leaving consumers vulnerable and open to attack.
